De naam Amethyst komt van het Griekse woord amethystos, dat zoiets betekent als "tegen dronkenschap".
Amethyst was reeds bekend bij de Egyptenaren, Etrusken en Romeinen. De steen werd wel bisschopssteen genoemd, omdat hij geleifd wewas bij kerkelijke hoogwaardigheidsbekleders en zou magische krachten bezitten. 
Amethyst behoort tot de kwartsgroep en is ιιn van de meest gewilde stenen. 
De kleur is violet, bleek-roodviolet. Deze violette kleur ontstaat door verontreinigingen van kleine hoeveelheid metaal-ionen in het kristalrooster, zoals; ijzer(Fe3+) en titaan Ti4+). 
De belangrijkste afzettingen komen voor in Brazilλ, Uruquay, Madagaskar. 
Uit Bolivia komt naast Amethyst ook Ametrien voor. Deze laatste is een samengaan van Amethyst en Citrien. Hiervan hebben we ook enkele stenen. 
Bekend is verder de mooie kwaliteit Amethyst uit Uruquay. 

Amethyst wordt soms behandeld(verhitting) en wordt dan omgezet in "Citrien" of Prasioliet.
De laatste is geel-groen van kleur en komt uit Braziliλ.
Ook zien we de laatste tijd zg. groene amethyst. Deze ontstaat door behandeling van amethyst. De kleur kan varieren van lichtgroen tot zeer intens groen.
Er bestaat Amethyst die bij zonlicht verbleekt. Door radiumbestraling is de oorspronkelijke kleur terug te halen.
